PNP now on heightened alert for 'Undas', starts deployment of over 50,000 cops
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has started the deployment of more than 50,000 policemen it committed to help secure the observance of the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 1 and 2.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melecio Nartatez, Jr. said the first focus are bus terminals and other transportation hubs, as well as major thoroughfares, as thousands of people began travelling to their respective hometowns for the annual observance of “Undas”.
“We have started our soft deployment of police personnel nationwide to ensure that our presence is already felt as early as now. This proactive measure aims to ensure smoother coordination and preparedness before the expected influx of travelers later this week,” Nartatez said.
Currently, the police forces across the country are on a heightened alert which means that all police units nationwide are required to increase their level of readiness and security posture to respond quickly to any incident or emergency. The alert status will remain until Nov. 3.
Nartatez earlier ordered the increased deployment of police personnel to around 50,000 to guarantee a safe, peaceful, and orderly nationwide observance of Undas, which is more than the 32,000 police personnel deployed last year.
He said police personnel will be supported by 16,592 personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), along with 45,712 force multipliers.
“As we expect large crowds in cemeteries, terminals, and major thoroughfares, my instruction is to ensure that polie presence is felt not to intimidate but to reassure. Our presence should give comfort and peace of mind to the public,” said Nartate.
“My directive to our troops on the ground is simple: be visible, be courteous, and be ready to assist,” he emphasized.
He said all regional and provincial directors were directed to activate and fully implement their operational plans for “Undas”, in close coordination with local government units and relevant government agencies.
Checkpoints, police assistance desks, and mobile patrols will remain operational 24/7 throughout the long weekend, according to Nartatez.
Of the total number of policemen to be deployed, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said a total of 2,288 will be assigned to airports; 1,771 to bus stations, and 1,054 to seaports to assist travelers and returning residents.
A total of 35,661 personnel will be stationed in 5,065 cemeteries and columbaria across the country, and 6,475 will be deployed to motorist assistance hubs and major thoroughfares.
On the other hand, a total of 5,015 Police Assistance Desks (PADs) will also be operational in cemeteries, transport terminals, and major thoroughfares as part of the “Ligtas Undas 2025” security plan.
Each PADs will be manned by uniformed personnel, supported by barangay tanods, BPATs, and other force multipliers.
“We call on the public to observe cemetery rules and avoid bringing prohibited items such as bladed weapons, liquor, or gambling paraphernalia. Our police officers will be on the ground to assist and guide everyone, not to cause inconvenience. Let’s make Undas 2025 safe and meaningful for all,” said Tuaño.
Nartatez said the regional directors have been given the prerogative to adjust or increase deployment depending on the prevailing security situation in their respective areas.
“So far, no security threats have been detected, but the PNP will maintain close coordination with other law enforcement agencies and local government units,” Nartatez stressed.
“To ensure faster coordination and real-time response, police personnel deployed in the field will be equipped with body-worn cameras directly linked to the PNP Command Center, while Unified 911 hotlines and radio networks remain active for immediate assistance,” he added.
