The Office of Manila Vice Mayor Chi Atienza has officially launched the IT Literacy Training Program for solo parents, marking the start of a citywide digital upskilling initiative aimed at empowering vulnerable sectors through technology.
In partnership with Nexus Technology Inc., the inaugural session was held at the Nexus Center Office in Makati City, gathering the first batch of participants from the National Solo Parent Council Manila Chapter.
This activity follows the formalization of the partnership between Atienza’s office and Nexus last August 19.
While the collaboration was initially introduced to support senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs), Vice Mayor Atienza shared that the first rollout would focus on solo parents, a group she described as “close to her heart.”
“Alam n’yo po, isa sa mga sektor na malapit talaga sa puso ko ay ang ating mga solo parents, mga magigiting na ina at ama na sabay na ginagampanan ang dalawang pinakamahalagang papel sa pamilya (You know, one of the sectors closest to my heart are our solo parents, the brave mothers and fathers who take on the two most important roles in the family),” Atienza said.
“Hindi lamang dahil danas ko ang kanilang mga paghihirap at sakripisyo, kundi dahil hindi po matatawaran ang kanilang dedikasyon sa pagtataguyod ng kanilang pamilya (Not only because I have experienced their struggles and sacrifices, but also because their dedication to raising their families is truly beyond measure),” she added.
The training provided hands-on sessions designed to improve participants’ technical skills, including learning how to use Canva and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that can help them find new sources of information and income.
“Kaya naman, masaya kong ibalita na sa tulong ng Nexus, nakapagsagawa tayo ng IT Literacy Training Program para sa kanila (That is why I am happy to share that with the help of Nexus, we were able to conduct this IT Literacy Training Program for them),” Atienza said.
Atienza highlighted the vital role of technology in today’s society, noting that every digital skill learned opens new opportunities for growth.
She emphasized that mastering technology is not only a tool for personal advancement but also a gateway to a more secure and progressive future, one that benefits not just the solo parents themselves but also their children and the wider community.
The vice mayor emphasized that the initiative reflects how compassion and collaboration can help Filipino families take meaningful steps forward in the digital world.
She also urged more private sector partners to support the city’s push for a more inclusive and digitally empowered Manila.
“With unity and compassion, we can help every family take their first few clicks toward progress,” Atienza concluded.
