Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte and Akbayan Party-list Rep. Percival Cendaña--House colleagues in the current 20th Congress--began beefing on Monday, Oct. 27, and it didn't take long for personal shots to be hurled from either direction.
It started on Monday afternoon with a statement from Rep. Duterte, who was apparently reacting to something that Cendaña said about the former's family on his social media.
But before directly responding to it, Rep. Duterte felt compelled to throw some verbal lefts and rights to his fellow congressman. The Dabawenyo even referred to Cendaña as "Val", as if they were buddies (they're not).
"Val, before you fantasize about sending us to The Hague, maybe you should first explain to the Filipino people who exactly gave you the authority to act like the judge, jury, and executioner. Did your Facebook engagements appoint you? Or is this just another audition tape for relevance?" Rep. Duterte said.
His father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, has been incarcerated at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague in the Netherlands since March 11. He is being tried for a charge of crimes against humanity in connection with his bloody war on drugs.
"You want a 'day of reckoning'? Be careful what you wish for. Because that day may come, and the Filipino people might finally reckon with the fact that you and your kind have accomplished nothing but noise," Rep. Duterte said in his message to Cendaña.
"You claim to speak for the poor. Funny. The poor don’t even know who you are...History is written by those who actually work for the nation…not by those desperately trying to go viral," he further said, taunting the Akbayan solon.
As expected, "Mader Perci" didn't take any of these sitting down, and fired back later that night.
"Ang sipag maglabas ng statements lately, ah. Sana ganyan din kasipag sa paggawa ng batas. Ilan na nga ba nai-file man lang? (So active in releasing statements lately, huh. Wish you're just as diligent in making laws. How many have been filed, at least?)" Cendaña asked.
He reminded Rep. Duterte to simply release his statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth (SALN) to the public instead of responding to his "old" posts.
"Antagal na nung chika ko ha. Ngayon ka lang nakaisip ng sagot? Daming chika, paligoy-ligoy. Ilabas mo na lang ang SALN mo, kasama ng sa mga kapatid mo (That statement of mine is old. You only thought of a reply now? So many statements, beating around the bush. Just release your SALN, along with your siblings."
Cendaña went on to call the Mindanaoan's bluff regarding his recent spate of tough talk.
"I see what you’re trying to do, you’re channeling the Digong in you. But sorry, bad copy. It’s not working. And oh, we don’t fantasize about sending you or your kind to The Hague," he told Rep. Duterte.
"Your father, and your gang, sealed your fate the moment you thought you could kill thousands without consequence. So yes, there will be a day of reckoning. In fact, it already began when your father was brought before the ICC," he further said.
Rep. Duterte's relatives in government include his sister, Vice President Sara Duterte and his brother, acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte.
