ZAMBOANGA CITY - After days of tension, a fierce firefight erupted in Tipo Tipo municipality, Basilan province on Tuesday, Oct. 28, between soldiers and lawless elements and forces affiliated with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
The gunfight erupted after negotiations led by the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities and a certain Commander Rajan reportedly failed to obtain a peaceful settlement to the conflict.
Reports said that two civilians were injured in the firefight and were brought to the Lamitan District Hospital in Lamitan City, Basilan. No identities were given.
Roads leading to Tipo Tipo were closed by security forces due to the ongoing gunbattle.
Tensions started after the murder of Islamic teacher and Baguindan barangay kagawad Nadzri Tarahin in broad daylight last week in a bus terminal in Lamitan City.
Two suspects were arrested by police during a hot pursuit operation but tensions still remained particularly in Tipo Tipo.
On Monday, Oct. 27, residents fled the town after reports circulated about a possible attack by lawless elements with some groups affiliated with the MILF.
The local government of Tipo Tipo suspended classes on all levels and work in government and private offices to protect residents.
The local government called on all residents to remain calm and vigilant for terrorist activities in their communities.
The provincial government of Basilan together with the 101st Brigade and the Basilan Provincial Police Office condemned the violent attack on Tipo Tipo.
They condoled with the family, the Muslim community, and residents on the death of Tarahin.
