DSWD on standby to aid residents displaced by Basilan clashes

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday, Oct. 28 said it is ready to assist residents affected by the ongoing clashes between members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and government troops in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian directed the agency’s Field Office 9 in Zamboanga Peninsula to prepare for the possible deployment of family food packs and other non-food items to assist families who may be displaced by the conflict.

Undersecretary Alan Tanjusay of the DSWD’s Peace and Development Group reported that 14 social workers and project development officers assigned in Isabela City, Basilan remain safe amid the hostilities that erupted on Monday evening, Oct. 27.

“Our workers are preparing for the cash-for-work implementation with a batch of former MILF rebels in Basilan when the armed conflict erupted,” Tanjusay said.

He added that ₱277 million had been allocated for the cash-for-work program, originally intended for the decommissioning of former combatants, which was postponed by MILF leaders last month.

The local government of Tipo-Tipo has suspended classes and government work on Tuesday due to the ongoing conflict.
