The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) vowed on Tuesday, Oct 28, to hunt down those responsible for the death of one of its own, a police captain, who was gunned down by alleged gun-for-hire men in Cebu City over the weekend.
CIDG director Maj. Gen. Robert AA Morico II said the incident happened while his men were conducting casing and surveillance operations against gun-for-hire suspects onboard a motorcycle.
Police Capt. Joel H Deiparine, the assistant chief of Intelligence Section of the CIDG in Central Visayas, and Police Executive Master Sergeant Artchel C Tero tailed the motorcycle on board a pick-up but the gunmen noticed it and started shooting them.
Deiparine died after being hit several times in the body while Tero survived the gun attack and only suffered minor injuries.
“In this solemn moment, I and the whole CIDG family, extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Police Captain Joel Deiparine , who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of a sworn duty. His dedication and commitment to service, courage, and bravery will be eternally honored and remembered,” said Morico.
Morico visited the wake and was awarded the Medalya ng Kadakilaan (PNP Heroism Medal) (Posthumous) “for courageously standing his ground and valiantly performing his sworn duty, ultimately sacrificing his life in the line of duty.”
He said a Special Financial Assistance under Republic Act 6963 and the PSMBFI Partial Payment for Death Claims was given to the widow of the fallen officer.
“Rest assured that the CIDG will capture these gun-for-hire suspects to answer for the crime they committed, to serve the justice that Police Captain Deiparine deserves,” he added.
CIDG spokesperson Maj. Helen Dela Cruz said the City Government of Cebu offered P500,000 for any information that could lead to the arrest of the gunmen.
