Akari overcame the feisty plays of Galeries Tower in the last two sets to prevail 25-11, 25-23, 25-23, in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the FilOil EcoOil Arena in San Juan City on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
The Chargers lost their steam after a dominant first set and had to dig deep into their bag of tricks to overcome the next two frames en route to their third win in four games.
The victory somehow eased the sting of a five-set loss to Petro Gazz that snapped their two-game winning streak in Pool B.
Annie Mitchem delivered the goods as usual for Akari, pumping in 14 points built on 10 kills and four blocks, while Eli Soyud was equally consistent and tallied 12 points highlighted by three aces.
For a moment, Galeries Tower appeared headed to extend the game after taking 15-9 and 23-19 leads in the third set.
But Akari found its groove just in time, draining six straight points to close out the game in its favor.
Grethcel Soltones also paced the Chargers with nine points, four coming from the service area, while Fifi Sharma chipped in eight points.
The Highrisers continued their woes and fell to their fifth straight defeat in as many games, with import Jelena Cvijovic becoming the lone double-digit scorer with 10 points.
