Police official in trouble over missing Caloocan City detainee
Police Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin, director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), ordered on Monday, Oct. 27, the relief of a police official for bringing out an inmate from a detention facility in Caloocan City.
Aberin said he also ordered an in-depth investigation into the case involving an official with a rank of Police Lieutenant Colonel and who also heads the Special Operations Unit of the Northern Police District.
“I ordered his relief, and the filing of criminal and administrative charges,” said Aberin.
Based on the report, a detainee was reported missing during the regular accounting at around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the District Special Operations Unit Detention Facility.
The detainee is a construction worker who was arrested for a case of murder.
The incident was reported to the police colonel as head of the NPD-DSOU and he admitted to being with the missing inmate.
When asked why, the police colonel said he and the missing inmate were conducting a case build-up.
The incident, however, was a violation of the existing policy and this what placed the police colonel in trouble, especially that he did not undergo the normal procedure in dealing with an inmate.
NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said the missing inmate was returned to the detention facility while the police colonel was arrested.
The police official is facing a case of violation of the Article 223 of the Revised Penal Code, or conniving with or consenting to evasion of service of sentence.
