Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel visited Manila for a historic Pacific Tour where she talked about the “deep connection” between the two countries and their shared values and friendship.

The Philippines is part of the official’s “landmark diplomatic tour of the Pacific region,” along with Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand, the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines said.

Haskel, who was in the country last Oct. 19, underscored the friendship between the Philippines and Israel, citing their shared values, development cooperations, and historical connections.

In particular, she thanked the Philippines for supporting the Jewish refugees during World War II, and gave recognition to the Filipino community and the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who call Israel their home.

“The Filipino people offered shelter to Jews during one of history’s darkest times. We will forever remember that” she said.

Calling Filipinos in Israel as vital contributors to society there, Haskel recalled how a Filipino delegation recently celebrated the Israel’s Feast of the Tabernacle.

“It was a beautiful moment that reflected the deep connection and shared faith between our nations,” she said.

The deputy foreign minister noted the OFWs in Israel are “known for their care, hard work, and dedication.“

“Filipino professionals in Israel, whether in caregiving, hospitality, or other sectors, are part of our extended family,” she shared.

While acknowledging the challenges placed by the October 7 attacks on Israel by militant group Hamas on foreign nationals, including Filipinos, the official assured that Israel will continue to provide support for victims through medical, psychological, and financial assistance.

“Peace is only possible if Hamas disarms and the international community holds them accountable,” she said.

She concluded her visit to Manila with a dinner with the Jewish community in the Philippines, discussing with them the importance of education in strengthening the community’s future.
