DAVAO CITY – Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte questioned the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ plans to use United States missiles reportedly capable of reaching China, warning that such initiatives could put Filipino lives at risk.
In a statement on Saturday, Oct. 25, Duterte criticized AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. for highlighting the missiles’ range and asked if the military could guarantee protection against possible retaliation.
Brawner confirmed the presence of the US mid-range Typhoon weapon system in the country.
He emphasized, however, that the deployment is not explicitly aimed at China, but is intended for training purposes and strengthen credible deterrence.
“Are you willing to gamble Filipino lives just to show loyalty to your bosses?” Duterte asked, questioning the general’s priorities and whether the military could guarantee protection against possible retaliation.
The Davao lawmaker challenged whose interests the military serves, saying, “If it’s for the Filipino people, you wouldn’t make ordinary citizens collateral damage while boasting at press conferences.”
Duterte also called attention to domestic issues, urging officials to focus on corruption, inefficient projects, and other internal problems rather than promoting foreign defense capabilities.
“Don’t lecture us about defending the nation if you can’t even defend the people from thieves in uniform and suits,” he said, adding that the Filipino people need leaders who prioritize the people’s welfare.
“We want peace, security, and sovereignty — not missiles with someone else’s fingerprints,” Duterte said.
