Carlos Yulo made his presence felt and bounced back with a gold medal in the men’s vault final of the 2025 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Saturday, Oct. 25, in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Motivated to recover from his bronze medal finish in floor exercise last Friday, the two-time Olympic champion put his prowess on full display in his pet event where he scored a winning average of 14.866 points after registering 15.200 in the first vault and 14.533 in the second.
The 25-year-old Yulo topped the podium and bested Armenian Artur Davtyan (14.833) and Ukrainian Nazar Cherpurnyi (14.483) who took the silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the elite 8-man field.
Finishing outside the Top 3 were Italy’s Tommaso Brugnami (14.666), China’s Mingqi Huang, AIN’s Mukhammad Iakubov (14.183), AIN’s Daniel Marinov (14.150), and Japan’s Kazuki Minami.
This marked the second gold for the Leveriza, Manila native after winning his first vault event way back in the 2021 Kitakyushu edition in Japan.
It was also his second medal this year after plucking the bronze in the men’s floor exercise where Filipino-British Jake Jarman topped the apparatus.
Despite his overwhelming success in Indonesia, Yulo is skipping this year's 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.
Yulo decided not to compete in the biennial meet after the local organizing committee limited the participants to just one apparatus in artistic gymnastics.
He also opted to give his teammates in the national team a chance to shine and be recognized, according to Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion.
