President Marcos Jr. has vowed to uphold the Philippines’ commitment to a rules-based international order and the peaceful resolution of disputes in the region as he left for Kuala Lumpur for the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits.
In his departure statement on Saturday, Oct. 25, Marcos said he will join fellow ASEAN leaders in reaffirming the country’s commitment to ASEAN centrality amid pressing regional and global challenges, including developments in the South China Sea, the situation in Myanmar, threats to regional peace and maritime security, the far-reaching impacts of climate change, economic volatility, and transnational crime.
“I will continue to champion our advocacies in promoting an open, inclusive, and rules-based international order and for the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law,” he said.
The summit, hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, carries the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, reflecting ASEAN’s shared pursuit of unity, resilience, and people-centered development.
“The Philippines fully supports Malaysia's chairship this year and its vision of an ASEAN that promotes meaningful, inclusive, and sustainable development,” the President said.
He added that these discussions are essential to maintaining regional stability and advancing shared prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Economic cooperation and new ASEAN member
President Marcos said he will also emphasize the Philippines’ commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system, calling it “a vital compass as we navigate today's complex geoeconomic challenges.”
During the summit, ASEAN leaders are expected to formally welcome Timor-Leste as the newest member of the regional bloc.
Malaysia will also turn over the ASEAN chairship to the Philippines, marking the “symbolic start” of the country’s leadership of the soon-to-be 11-member association in the coming year.
Commitment to the Filipino people
President Marcos said his participation reaffirms the country’s dedication to regional cooperation and its long-standing advocacy for peace and stability.
“As always, our participation in the ASEAN Summit reaffirms our dedication to deepening regional cooperation and to advancing the well-being of every Filipino in the entire Southeast Asian community,” he said.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the three-day Summit will focus on strengthening regional cooperation under Malaysia’s chairship, providing a platform for the ASEAN leaders to build consensus and exchange views on key regional and global issues affecting Southeast Asia.
Marcos is expected to attend 14 Leaders’ level meetings and participate in three signing ceremonies, including the Declaration on the Admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th Member, as well as witness the signing of the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0 Upgrade.
On the sidelines of the Summit, the Chief Executive will hold several bilateral meetings with fellow leaders to further strengthen diplomatic relations and explore new areas of cooperation.
While out of the country, President Marcos has designated Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Conrado Estrella III, and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara as government caretakers.
