Adamson stretched its winning streak to three after escaping University of the East, 56-53, in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Saturday, Oct. 25.
Gaining much momentum after claiming two consecutive victories ahead of the second round, the Soaring Falcons leaned on Austin Ronzone and Earl Medina who connived to create a 54-50 breakaway that the Red Warriors failed to overcome despite having several chances.
Adamson now hiked its record to 4-4, sharing the fifth spot with Ateneo in the standings, while UE absorbed its eighth defeat in as many games and 13th overall from last season.
The Falcons also reaffirmed their mastery over the Warriors, who they had beaten 77-62 in the first round.
“We should be happy kung nasaan kami, only because hindi pa kami patay. Buhay pa and our head is above water, ‘yon lang naman ‘yong gusto [namin eh] na [we] just want to have a chance to move forward,” said Falcons head coach Nash Racela.
“Today was not that nice, pero buti na lang nakakuha kami ng panalo,” he added.
The San Marcelino-based squad relied on its balanced offense with Cedrick Manzano tallying 11 points with 10 rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and one steal.
Earl Anabo chipped in eight, while AJ Fransman and Matty Erolon, who closed out the game with his two free throws, scored seven apiece for Adamson.
John Abate paced UE after pouring in 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals which supported by Precious Momowei’s double-double effort of 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The Red Warriors are still missing the services of their chief tactician Chris Gavina and Wello Lingolingo due to their respective suspensions.
Adamson goes for its fourth consecutive win when it battles University of Santo Tomas, while UE hopes to end its dry spell against De La Salle University with both games set this Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the same arena.
The scores:
AdU (56) – Manzano 11, Anabo 8, Fransman 7, Erolon 7, Torres 5, Medina 5, A. Ronzone 3, Ojarikre 3, Cañete 3, Montebon 2, Demisana 2, C. Ronzone 0, Perez 0, Jaymalin 0, Barcelona 0, Tumaneng 0.
