Magnolia and Converge, two teams emerging as early contenders, tangle against separate foes in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Hotshots (2-1) aim to get back on track when they take on the Terrafirma Dyip (1-2) in the curtain raiser at 5:15 p.m. while the FiberXers (2-1) battle the Phoenix Fuel Masters (1-2) for a chance to notch their first win streak of the season in the second game at 7:30 p.m.
After a strong 2-0 start that included convincing wins over Ginebra and Titan Ultra, Magnolia absorbed a heartbreaking 78-76 defeat at the hands of Meralco – something head coach LA Tenorio hopes his wards recover from against the Dyip.
Zav Lucero and Jerom Lastimosa are also coming off stellar performances and Magnolia looks to continue riding their hot hands against a dangerous Dyip side which will be spearheaded once more by Jerrick Ahanmisi.
The 27-year-old gunner will be facing his former team Magnolia since trading him for Javi Gomez de Liano during the offseason.
Backstopping Ahanmisi are Louie Sangalang and Paolo Hernandez. Ahanmisi’s brother, Maverick, isn’t expected to suit up for the team just yet.
Meanwhilein the second game, Converge is gunning for its second straight win after taking downTerrafirma, 125-108, just last Wednesday.
Juan Gomez de Liano is primed to lead the charge for the FiberXers especially coming off his second PBA career triple-double of 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in just his third official game.
He had a smashing PBA debut when he had 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in Converge’s rout of Titan Ultra.
Of course, Converge isn’t a one-man wrecking crew with guys like Justin Baltazar and Justine Arana ready to man the paint while Schonny Winston and Alec Stockton also providing the added scoring punch.
Standing in front of them, however, are the Fuel Masters who will try to avoid falling to their second straight loss after dropping their last game against NLEX, 87-81.
Ricci Rivero is enjoying his best scoring conference with Phoenix so far and he will be tasked to spearhead the assault alongside Jason Perkins, Evan Nelle and Kai Ballungay
