Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan underscored his vision of a “modern yet moral” coast guard during the agency’s 124th founding anniversary celebration on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the PCG headquarters in Manila.
In his speech before President Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, a PCG auxiliary officer with the honorary rank of auxiliary vice admiral, Gavan said the PCG is committed to building a maritime institution that is not only capable and professional but also grounded in integrity and compassion.
A highlight of the celebration was the turn over the Commandant’s Report for 2024–2025 to Marcos, highlighting the PCG’s successful missions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), where Filipino coast guardians brave Chinese maritime forces’ dangerous maneuvers and water cannon attacks, among others, during operations.
“As we chart our course forward, may we continue to be a Coast Guard that is modern yet moral, capable yet compassionate, calm but unyielding,” he said.
Gavan announced that the PCG aims to triple its fleet within the next five years to strengthen its ability to respond to maritime incidents, protect national interests, and assist in disaster operations.
He highlighted the agency’s close coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in safeguarding the country’s maritime domain, and lauded its strong partnerships with government agencies, the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, and media organizations that promote transparency and accountability.
Meanwhile, Marcos and Gavan also honored the outstanding PCG units and personnel for their exemplary performance, professionalism, and dedication to public service.
