Today, Oct. 23, 2025, the Manila Bulletin historical marker will be unveiled at the office building of the 125-year-old media company at the corner of Muralla and Recoletos Streets in Intramuros, Manila.
The marker states:
MANILA BULLETIN
(First printed as the Daily Bulletin by Carson C. Taylor to serve as a free source of commercial information and printed at the El Progreso press on Carriedo Street on February 2, 1900. Moved to Evangelista Street in Quiapo in 1901. Focused on economic topics in 1904. Became incorporated as the Bulletin Publishing Company in 1912. Gained recognition for reporting on corruption in some government agencies during the 1930s. Continued publication during World War II until it was shut down by the Japanese in 1942. After its building was destroyed during the war, it resumed circulation in 1946 from its new location on Florentino Torres Street. Moved to the Shurdut Building in Intramuros in 1956. Sold to Menzi and Co. and underwent reorganization in 1957. Began publishing its Sunday edition in 1965 and the Panorama magazine in 1968. Closed down following the declaration of Martial Law on September 23, 1972. Resumed operations and was relaunched as Bulletin Today on November 22, 1972. Transferred to its current office building in Intramuros, formerly the site of the Recoletos Church, in 1977. Led by Emilio Yap in 1984. Restored to its original name, Manila Bulletin, on March 12, 1986. One of the oldest newspapers in the Philippines.)
When the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) confers a historical marker, it is not merely installing a plaque—it is engraving a legacy. The recognition given to Manila Bulletin is, therefore, more than a ceremonial honor. It is an acknowledgment of the institution’s enduring contribution to Philippine history, culture, and democracy through the power of the written word.
For 125 years, Manila Bulletin has chronicled the nation’s story—its triumphs and tragedies, its heroes and challenges, its evolving aspirations as a people. It was first published as the Manila Daily Bulletin in Feb. 2, 1900 “to give the public accurate and reliable shipping and commercial information and nothing else.”
From the turmoil of war to the birth of freedom, to navigating the complexities of the digital age, the paper has stood as a steadfast witness. Its pages have mirrored the nation’s heartbeat, recording not only events but also the collective spirit that defines the Filipino identity.
The Manila Bulletin is honored to have been given the distinction of this historical marker, which recognizes the newspaper’s role as a guardian of truth and a custodian of public memory. The recognition also underscores that journalism, when practiced with integrity, becomes part of the nation’s heritage. Newspapers and other media platforms, after all, are not just repositories of daily news—they are archives of our national conscience. They tell future generations who we were, what we valued, and how we persevered.
This marker is also a call to reflection at a time when truth faces many challenges—from misinformation to the fast pace of digital communication. The honor reminds both journalists and readers that history is shaped not only by events but by how those events are truthfully told.
For the men and women who have worked, written, edited, and published under the Manila Bulletin banner, this marker is a tribute to their commitment to public service through information. For readers and citizens, it stands as a symbol of the press’s essential place in a free and democratic society.
In accepting this recognition, Manila Bulletin also accepts a continuing responsibility—to keep telling the nation’s story with honesty, depth, and compassion; to inform with clarity and context; and to inspire a people toward understanding and unity.
A nation’s history is written not only in monuments but also in the pages that chronicle its journey. Through this recognition, the Manila Bulletin joins the ranks of those who have helped shape that journey—with ink, with courage, and with an unwavering faith in the Filipino story.
