LEGAZPI CITY – The Diocese of Legazpi condemned on Thursday the killing of radio broadcaster Noel Samar, who died after he was shot by an unidentified gunman on Maharlika Highway in Guinobatan, Albay, earlier this week.
"We share in their grief and express our solidarity with all who condemn this killing and who call for justice and accountability in the face of this senseless act of violence," Bishop Joel Baylon said in a statement.
Baylon said the clergy and laity of the Diocese of Legazpi extend heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family, friends, and colleagues of Samar.
"The cry of this tragedy surely reaches the Lord. 'Thou shalt not kill,' the Lord commands. May this awaken in all of us a renewed resolve to defend the sanctity of life, to pursue truth with courage, and to work together for peace founded on justice and Christian love," he added.
Police Regional Office-5 (Bicol) Director Police Brig. Gen. Nestor Babagay Jr. ordered a thorough investigation to solve the case.
"I just concluded the third case conference of the Special Investigation Task Group Samar (SITG Samar). This sustained, intensive effort shows our clear resolve to solve this case," he said.
Babagay directed the task force to pursue every lead and to bring justice to the victim's family.
"To the people of Bicol, let me be unequivocal: This demonstrates that impunity has no place here. Your police force is determined, focused, and we will protect our community," he added. (PNA)
