The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Wednesday, October 22, a mid-school year wellness break for teachers and learners from October 27 to 30, encouraging schools to allow teachers recovery time and adjust the schedule of the In-Service Training (INSET) after the break.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said the decision follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to prioritize the well-being of teachers and learners, especially those affected by recent natural disasters and flu outbreaks.
“Sa linggo-linggo nating pagbisita sa mga paaralan, naririnig namin ang panawagan ng ating mga guro (During our weekly visits to schools, we hear the call of our teachers),” Angara said in a statement.
“Minabuti na natin na mabigyan sila ng oras para magpahinga at magkaroon ng dagdag na oras kasama ang kanilang pamilya (We have deemed it right to give them time to rest and additional time to spend with their families),” he added.
Classes are scheduled to resume on November 3, after the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day holidays.
Taking a break
Angara underscored the importance of rest and recovery for teachers and students affected by recent typhoons, earthquakes, and flu cases.
“Marami sa ating mga guro at mag-aaral ay galing sa mga lugar na tinamaan ng bagyo at lindol o may mga kaso ng trangkaso (Many of our teachers and students come from areas affected by typhoons and earthquakes or are dealing with cases of the flu),” Angara said.
“Kaya sabi nga natin, konting pahinga muna. Mas makakapagtrabaho tayo nang maayos kung maayos din ang pakiramdam natin (That’s why, as we say, let’s take a short break first. We can work better if we’re feeling well),” he added.
Modifications
DepEd said the wellness break modifies certain provisions of DepEd Memorandum–Office of the Undersecretary for Learning Systems–2025–095, in line with Department Order No. 12, s. 2025, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the physical and mental health of educators and students.
Schools and divisions that have already paid for INSET venues and meals may move their schedules to a later date or repurpose the funds.
“If not feasible, the activities may still push through voluntarily, and teachers who join will no longer be required to attend similar trainings later in the school year,” DepEd said.
DepEd emphasized that INSET and other professional development programs should still be conducted on alternative dates, as coordinated with Schools Division Offices (SDOs) and Regional Offices (ROs).
“Schools are given discretion to adjust their schedules in coordination with their respective Schools Division Offices (SDOs) and Regional Offices (ROs),” DepEd added.
INSET, or In-Service Training, is a structured professional development program designed to help teachers and school leaders enhance their knowledge, teaching skills, and classroom practices.
It also supports teachers in keeping pace with curriculum reforms, new teaching strategies, and innovations that improve learning outcomes.
