University of Santo Tomas flexed its might and toppled University of the Philippines, 75-61, to sweep its first-round campaign in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Fueled to complete their redemption bid this year, the Golden Tigresses stepped on the gas pedal early and built a 52-37 breakaway in the third quarter to overcome the comeback attempt from the Fighting Maroons.
UST now heads into the second round with an immaculate 7-0 tally, while the State U settled for a 2-5 win-loss record to tie with Adamson.
Brig Santos stood out from both sides with a game-high of 26 points with one rebound, two assists, and six steals, while Rachelle Ambos added 10 as two UST bets were the only double-digit scorers for the España-based squad.
“It’s a big win for us, especially as we are now heading into the next round and we hope it continues,” said Santos.
Camille Nolasco paced UP with 16 points while Alex Mendoza and Yel Vingno combined for 22 points in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, reigning champ National University stamped its class and annihilated University of the East, 83-54, for its fifth consecutive win.
