Reigning champion University of the Philippines fended off a late rally to reaffirm its mastery over National University, 78-74, and take the solo third spot in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, Oct. 22.
After losing the momentum in the fourth, the Fighting Maroons regained their composure and transformed a 56-55 lead into a comfortable 74-66 cushion orchestrated by Harold Alarcon and Gani Stevens.
Their efforts proved to be sufficient to repel Jake Figueroa and the Bulldogs’ final push and boost the State U’s record to 5-3.
NU, on the other hand, remained at the top of the standings despite absorbing its second loss with six victories.
“Malaking bagay na nagkaroon kami strong start and that’s been rare for us not only in the UAAP but the whole year,” said assistant coach Christian Luanzon. “Our defense was able to hold up until the end and [we have] to give it to NU, there’s a reason why they’re the number one team [so far].”
It was the second time that the Diliman-based squad outshone NU after winning in their first face-off with a 66-59 decision last Oct. 4 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion as well as a sort of a bounce back triumph after yielding to De La Salle University, 72-69, over the weekend.
Alarcon starred for the Maroons with 24 points on top of three rebounds, four assists, and one block. Noy Remogat and Reyland Torres chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
“As one of the seniors, kailangan ko lang maging compose, so 'yon ang naibigay ko sa team [para] makita nila na ‘yong senior nila na ganun,” said Alarcon.
Stevens also shone after listing seven points, six rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Terrence Fortea and Jacob Bayla added six apiece.
Figueroa, for his part, posted a superb statline of 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, one steal and two blocks. Last game’s hero Paul Francisco and PJ Palacielo conspired for 24 points.
Omar John went cold on offense with five points on top of two rebounds and one steal in 20 minutes of play. Mark Parks and Jolo Manansala also added seven and six points which all went for naught.
