SPC subsidiary to build 160-MWh battery storage projects in Visayas
The Visayas region is set to host two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects to be developed by a subsidiary of SPC Power Corp. in Panay and Bohol.
In a statement, SPC Island Power Corp. (SIPC) announced it has signed two contracts for a 100 megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS project in Dingle, Iloilo, and a 60 MWh BESS facility in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. The costs for these projects were not disclosed.
The contracts include supply agreements with Beijing Hyperstrong Technology Co. Ltd., while the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract was granted to China Communications Services Philippines Corp.
BESS facilities allow excess power from energy sources like solar to be stored and exported back to the grid during periods of high demand or low supply. This helps stabilize the Visayas grid while supporting other energy facilities.
James N. Villareal, SIPC executive vice president, said that these BESS developments will contribute to the country’s growing renewable energy (RE) fleet.
“We are pleased to partner with Hyperstrong and China Communications Services to deliver these energy storage projects, underscoring our commitment to support the country's RE development with sufficient energy storage capacity for grid stability,” he said.
These recently signed projects were part of the company’s list of developments presented during its annual stockholders’ meeting last June.
Apart from the BESS advancements, SPC Power is also moving forward with solar power projects. The company received a certificate of authority (COA) from the Department of Energy (DOE) to complete a 48 MW solar facility in Iloilo.
SPC Power's current portfolio includes the Panay Diesel Power Plant (PDPP) in Iloilo, the KEPCO SPC Power Plant (KSPC) in Naga, Cebu, the Bohol Diesel Power Plant (BDPP) in Bohol, the Cebu Diesel Power Plant (CDPP) in Cebu, and Power Barge 104 in Bohol.
The company is expecting to raise 500 MW of capacity within the next four years through its RE developments and other project acquisitions.
