PNP condemns attack on Bicolano journalist; Nartatez orders in-depth probe

Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr., acting chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), ordered a thorough investigation into the attack of a radio reporter who was shot in Guinobatan, Albay on Monday, Oct. 20.
Nartatez said a hot pursuit operation was launched to apprehend the gunman while the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) “Samar” was also created to focus on case build-up, evidence gathering, and coordination with other law enforcement units to bring the gunman to justice.
“I have already instructed the Regional Director, PRO- (Police Regional Office ) 5 to look into all the angles to identify all those behind this attack and arrest them in the soonest possible time,” said Nartatez.
“We strongly condemn this attack against a member of the media. This kind of violence has no place in our society,” he added.
Victim Noel Bellen Samar, 54, was affiliated with Kadunong iTV and DWIZ in Legazpi City.
Based on the initial investigation, was shot in the chest and abdomen by an unidentified gunman around 9 a.m. on Oct. 20 along Maharlika Highway at Purok 3, Barangay Morera in Guinobatan town.
He was taken to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) in Legazpi City while the assailant immediately fled the scene.
Nartate said police investigators have already gathered initial evidence and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrator.
“The PNP remains steadfast in its mission to maintain peace and order and ensure that those who commit acts of violence are held accountable. Rest assured, we will not stop until justice is served,” said Nartatez.
