Over 40 progressive groups hold protest at Mendiola, calling for land reform
Thousands of farmers under the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and its chapters march from Liwasang Bonifacio to Mendiola in Manila City on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025, to mark the celebration of Peasant Month and denounce what they describe as the worsening corruption, repression, and neglect of the agricultural sector. Protestors reiterate the call for land, food, and justice and the immediate persecution of all corrupt public officials involved in flood control and farm-to-market road anomalies.
Over 40 progressive organizations held a protest rally at the foot of Mendiola Bridge in Manila on Tuesday, Oct. 21, to mark Peasant’s Month and call for genuine land reform, social justice, and government accountability.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), the protest began at around 10:53 AM and concluded peacefully by 12:45 p.m.
An estimated 1,000 individuals from various peasant, youth, workers’, and rights-based groups participated in the demonstration.
The groups marched from Liwasang Bonifacio to Mendiola, carrying placards and chanting slogans that demanded increased wages, lower prices, and justice for farmers.
Among the most prominent rallying cries were: “Tunay na reporma sa lupa, ipaglaban!, Sahod itaas, presyo ibaba!, and Lahat ng kurakot, dapat managot (Fight for genuine land reform! Raise wages, lower prices!, and All corrupt officials must be held accountable)."
Organizations that took part included Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), AMIHAN, KPL, Anakbayan, NNRA Youth, Tambisan ng Sining, Alliance of Health Workers (AHW), Health Empowerment in Action for Leyte and Samar (HEAD), SINAGBAYAN PUP, Panday Sining, SAKA, CSP, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), Katribu, Student Tandem (ST), Migrante, PNU USC, JRMMCEU, GABRIELA, Bahaghari, LAKAS, AMBALA, Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Moro Christian Peoples Alliance, TAMA NA, ACT Teachers, Nexperia Workers Union, Kalikasan PNE, Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP), AGHAM Youth, Tanggol Magsasaka, PISTON, All-UP Workers Alliance, UPM USC, UP Diliman students, PMSA, One Piece Coalition, PCFS, Aksyon Health Workers, FNU, Altermidya, Sandugo, Anakpawis, Social Work Educators and Advocates of the Philippines (SWEAP), and COURAGE.
Notable personalities were also present at the event, including former Bayan Muna Representative Teddy Casiño, Former ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro, labor leader Elmer Labog, and human rights advocate Cristina Palabay.
The program featured speeches, cultural performances, and the unveiling of protest effigies.
MPD maintained a security presence to ensure peace and order throughout the event.
As of 12:29 p.m., protest materials were being dismantled, marking the end of the activity.
Authorities confirmed that the protest remained peaceful and that no untoward incidents were recorded.
The MPD continues to monitor related activities as other protest actions are expected throughout October in line with Peasant’s Month.
