No need for mandatory face mask rule in Metro Manila yet amid rise in flu-like cases — Mayor Francis
San Juan City Mayor and Metro Manila Council (MMC) President Francis Zamora on Monday, Oct. 20, said there is no need yet for the implementation of mandatory wearing of face masks in Metro Manila despite a slight uptick in cases of flu-like illnesses in recent days.
Zamora made the statement during his inspection of San Juan City Cemetery, wherein he assured the public of the city's readiness as Undas nears.
He stated that San Juan City and other local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila have established preparation protocols to address a potential severe surge in flu-like illnesses, particularly during Undas when thousands are expected to visit cemeteries for their departed loved ones.
He added they are also prepared to order the mandatory wearing of face masks in case the Department of Health (DOH) deems it necessary.
The agency had earlier reported a 39 percent decline in influenza-like illness (ILI) cases in the first two weeks of October compared to the last two weeks of September but reminded the public to remain vigilant as the country continues to experience its usual flu season.
The DOH explained flu cases typically rise during the rainy months and continue until the transition of the southwest monsoon to the northeast monsoon or Amihan.
This period, marked by fluctuating temperatures and humidity, creates favorable conditions for flu viruses to spread.
Despite the decline in ILI cases, the health department clarified that there is no ongoing flu outbreak.
