NexGen unit gets DOE nod for Caliraya floating solar plant
NexGen Energy Corp.’s subsidiary has been authorized by the Department of Energy (DOE) to begin pre-development work for the Caliraya Lake floating solar photovoltaic power plant (SPPP) in Laguna.
In a filing to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Tuesday, Oct. 21, the company announced that the DOE granted a certificate of authority (COA) to NexGen’s 5hour Peak Energy Corp. for the development of the solar facility in Lumban, Laguna.
The award allows 5hour to acquire necessary permits, clearances, tenurial instruments, and other pre-feasibility studies for the project site.
The company has also applied for a 100-megawatt-peak floating solar energy operating contract (SEOC), which the DOE will issue once the COA requirements are met.
Even as its subsidiary moves forward with the floating solar facility, NexGen has also expressed interest in the DOE's upcoming offshore wind (OSW) auction.
The fifth Green Energy Auction (GEA-5) is set to start this quarter, offering 3,300 megawatts (MW) of capacity for bidding. The terms of reference (TOR) for the program have yet to be issued.
In July, the renewable energy (RE) firm said its 2,000 MW Real and 300 MW Mauban offshore wind facilities in Quezon had installed 120-meter met masts and wind instruments to verify the project sites' feasibility.
NexGen currently has two solar, seven OSW, and five onshore wind sites under development.
In April, the company's subsidiary, Airstream Renewables Corp. (ARC), secured the Board of Investments' (BOI) green lane certificates. These certificates are intended to fast-track permitting and licensing for the projects.
NexGen is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pure Energy Holdings Corp. and is actively seeking to expand its solar and wind opportunities across Asia.
