The Philippine Embassy in Washington clarified that there is no current crackdown on Filipinos holding dual citizenships in the United States amid circulating reports claiming the contrary.
In a statement on Monday, Oct. 20, the embassy denied social media reports saying that the US government is requiring dual citizenship holders to renounced their other nationality.
“The Philippine Embassy in Washington DC is aware of another viral video falsely claiming that the US government has announced a crackdown on dual citizens starting October 2025. This is not true,” the statement read.
Referring to a previous advisory in June, the embassy reiterated that the US government has made no policy changes regarding dual citizenships.
“The United States continues to recognize that individuals may hold citizenship in more than one country. There is no new policy requiring dual citizens to renounce another nationality, nor is there a ‘crackdown’ underway,” it stressed.
Instead, the embassy urged the Filipino community “to verify information through official government sources, avoid sharing unverified content, and report false information to the platform where it is published.”
“Please do not make legal decisions, such as renouncing your Philippine citizenship, based on social media content. Renunciation of Philippine citizenship is a serious, irreversible legal action,” it added.
The embassy said that Filipinos can reach out to the embassy and the consulates nearest them..
