National University tries to strike back at reigning champion University of the Philippines when second-round action begins in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, Oct. 22.
The Bulldogs suffered their lone setback in the first round after faltering late against the Fighting Maroons, 66-59, in their first encounter last Oct. 4 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
NU (6-1) has moved on from its past mistakes and will stake its three-game winning streak against the State U (4-3) in their 4:30 p.m. matchup, which comes next after the 2 p.m. clash between Ateneo and Far Eastern University.
Jeff Napa’s boys almost took a similar fate in their previous game where they squandered an 18-point lead before carving out a 71-66 escape over the Blue Eagles all thanks to the timely baskets from Jake Figueroa and Paul Francisco
“So I'm happy for them, for their decisions inside the court. Hopefully, coming to the second round, mas taasan pa namin ‘yong [level] ng approach namin [lalo na sa final stretch],” said Napa.
“Hindi kami pwede mag-relax sa mga next games namin, talagang mas susubukan pa namin maging maayos," Figueroa added.
Figueroa, 23, has embraced the leadership role, particularly being the go-to guy in the waning minutes that was one of the keys to Bulldogs’ success so far.
Backing him up are Francisco, Omar John, Steve Nash Enriquez, Jolo Manansala, and Gelo Santiago.
UP, for its part, tries to reaffirm its mastery against the promising NU side as well as to break the three-way tie with Ateneo and De La Salle University in the standings.
With Noy Remogat, Harold Alarcon, Gerry Abadiano, Terrence Fortea, Francis Nnoruka, and Gani Stevens, who starred in their previous win over NU, leading the charge, the Maroons look to bounce back from their 72-69 loss to the Green Archers last Sunday.
Meanwhile, the retooled Ateneo (4-3), which is currently missing Jared Bahay’s services, pours it all just to halt the three-game skid after a splendid 4-0 start.
With Bahay still uncertain to play, the Eagles will rely on Kymani Ladi, Dom Escobar, and Jaden Lazo with Shawn Tuano and Ian Espinosa when they meet the Tamaraws (2-5).
FEU, which snapped a two-game slide off a 95-76 triumph over undermanned University of the East, leans on Janrey Pasaol, Jorick Bautista, Mo Konateh, and Kirby Moncopa as they look to keep their Final Four hopes alive.
