8 extremists nabbed in Maguindanao del Sur

COTABATO CITY – Eight suspected local terrorists were arrested during a joint military-police law enforcement operation in Maguindanao del Sur on Monday.

Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the Army 601st Infantry Brigade, said the suspects were arrested after troops responded to civilians' tip about suspected extremists linked to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and Dawlah Islamiyah (DI)-Hassan Group in a remote barangay at the border of Shariff Aguak and Datu Unsay towns.

Combined forces from Army battalions under 601st Infantry Brigade and Maguindanao del Sur Police Provincial Office conducted the operation which led to the arrest of the suspected extremists.

Catu said the eight suspects were surprised that they were surrounded by government forces, prompting their surrender without incident.

They are now detained at Datu Unsay municipal police station while police are preparing charges against them.

The military recovered an M16A1 rifle, 207 rounds of ammunition, and mobile phones used by suspects in their terror activities, including extortion, ambushes, highway robberies, and attacks against government forces.

“The local populace has been tired of the atrocities and violence propagated by the DI and BIFF in their communities, so they help the police and military in neutralizing them,” Catu said in a statement.

Major Gen. Donald M. Gumiran, 6th Infantry Division commander and chief of Western Mindanao Command, lauded the operating units and the civilians for helping the government erase lawlessness and terrorism in Maguindanao del Sur. (PNA)
