DAVAO CITY – Davao City first district Rep. Paolo Duterte criticized the filing of a plunder case against former Narvacan, Ilocos Sur Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson, calling it politically motivated and an assault on free speech.
In a statement released to the media on Monday, Oct. 20, Rep. Duterte said the move reflects the administration’s growing intolerance for criticism. He added that the situation has become absurd, questioning whether the country has already lost its freedom of speech.
“Has freedom of speech already disappeared in this country? Now, anyone who dares to speak against the administration gets charged. So, this is what they call the new normal in government?” Rep. Duterte said.
The Davao City lawmaker accused government allies of hypocrisy and selective justice, saying they should first address corruption and other issues within their own ranks.
“If you really want justice, start with yourselves. When will you file cases against your own kind – and your drug-addicted children?” he said.
Rep. Duterte also alleged foreign influence in government decisions, suggesting that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is involved.
“Let us not pretend anymore – it is becoming obvious that the CIA is the one running this government,” Rep. Duterte said, adding that those who speak the truth are now being silenced.
“The problem now is that those who tell the truth are the ones being targeted. This is no longer democracy – it’s beginning to look like a syndicate controlling the people’s rights,” he added.
