At the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), the Comprehensive Center for Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment in Obstetrics and Gynecology received a much-needed upgrade, with the help of the Helping Women and Others (HWAO) Foundation. Simple ceremonies held at PGH in the early afternoon of Oct. 17, 2025, inaugurated this turnover, with the presence of renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Gap Legaspi, the third-term director of the UP Manila-Philippine General Hospital.
In her short speech, HWAO chairperson Libet C. Virata mentioned how one of the founding members of the foundation, Camille Santos-Samson, was a patient at PGH undergoing treatment for her ovarian cancer during the fire that broke out in May 2021. She had to literally walk down several flights of stairs while attached to her IV, and credits the fast-thinking nurses for assisting her all the way—even attending to her in the back seat of a parked car that night. When Camille first heard of HWAO embarking on a project with the PGH OB-GYN ward, she loved the comment that she had to be the poster girl.
Unfortunately, Camille passed away in June 2023. A plaque was mounted by the entrance to the new center, dedicating this HWAO effort to Camille's memory and thanking her family and friends for the support they extended in helping make this project a reality. The PGH OB-GYN staff were effusive in their thanks and appreciation for the refurbished center, gifting HWAO with certificates of appreciation.
