De La Salle head coach Topex Robinson knew the Archers must play with the cards they only have. No excuses whatsoever.
And in the aftermath of injuries that put their title aspirations in danger, Robinson could only challenge the players to make a miraculous run this year.
They responded in the most emphatic way possible.
With guard Kean Baclaan out for the rest of the season and big man Mason Amos doubtful to return to tip-top shape -- both due to an MCL tear -- DLSU delivered an inspiring win over reigning champion University of the Philippines, 72-69, in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament last Sunday, Oct. 19 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“No Kean, no Mason, but also no excuses. We're always going to come out. I told them whatever the result, as long as we just gave it our best,” said Robinson. “We know that we're going to be up against the defending champions and it's always going to be a test of character… So this is going to be a character game for us.”
The Taft-based squad came out with a fight to remember with its second stringers stepping up to disrupt UP’s four-game winning run.
Luis Pablo, who played as starter this time, was one of the Archers' reinforcers who delivered offensive support for the main gunners in Jacob Cortez and Mike Phillips. EJ Gollena and Earl Abadam also had key distributions in the scoring column.
Pablo, a former UP Maroon, showcased his best game so far as a Green Archer after listing 14 points, six rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal in almost 27 minutes of action.
“We owe it to Kean and Mason. It's sad and hard that they're not with us in the court. So, every game, we offer it to them, we owe it to them,” said the 21-year-old forward.
“They might not be in the court with us, but their hearts and spirits are always with us. So yeah, super happy now that we got this win, but we're far from over,” he added.
The victory over UP was a big boost for La Salle coming into the second round as it carries a 4-3 slate.
