Celebrating Day of German Unity with cultural showcase and renewed bilateral commitment
The traditional celebratory toast
The German Embassy in Manila commemorated the 35th anniversary of German reunification with a celebration of the Day of German Unity on Oct. 2. Held at the Shangri-La The Fort, the evening reception was hosted by German Ambassador Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke and his spouse, Marina Puhan Pfaffernoschke, and brought together a distinguished gathering of diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and friends of the embassy.
The event was a rich tapestry of cultural exchange and diplomatic goodwill. Guests were treated to performances by the renowned Ateneo Chamber Singers, who delivered a repertoire of both German and Filipino songs, and the Ryan Villamor Jazz Band, whose melodies added a festive ambiance. A fire dance by the Alab Poi Dancers and a Fall of the Berlin Wall exhibit further underscored the evening’s theme of unity and resilience.

This milestone, the result of a decade of preparation, offers the Philippines a global platform to showcase its rich literary heritage and cultural identity. A special highlight will be the presentation of a new German edition of José Rizal’s seminal novel, Noli Me Tangere, first published in Berlin in 1887, an enduring symbol of the deep people-to-people ties between the two nations.
Ambassador Pfaffernoschke also paid tribute to the more than 15,000 Filipino workers in Germany, many of whom serve as caregivers and nurses. He praised their professionalism and dedication, calling them proud ambassadors of the Philippines, while expressing Germany’s openness to welcome more Filipino workers.
Special appreciation was given to the staff of Shangri-La The Fort for their hospitality, and to the embassy team for their dedication in organizing the event. The Ambassador concluded with a personal note of gratitude to his wife, Marina, for her unwavering support and shared passion for the Philippines.
As the evening drew to a close, guests departed with a renewed sense of friendship and shared purpose, echoing the Ambassador’s closing words: “Dankeschön and Mabuhay!”
