Kram Airam Carpio delivered the country’s first gold medal at the 3rd Asian Youth Games after ruling the girls 51-55kg division in pencak silat on Monday, Oct. 20, in Manama, Bahrain.
A silver medalist at the Asian Pencak Silat Championship, Carpio lived up to her billing and edged Indonesia’s Qiken Dwi Tata Olifia, 33-19, to give Team Philippines a strong start in this multi-sport event.
Prior to the golden victory, Carpio made her campaign felt with a 36-22 win over Iran’s Nazaninfatemeh Kolasangiani before routing India’s Sakshi Thakur, 83-17, in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Oct. 19.
She kept her momentum going and toppled Kazakhstan’s Aliyam Azizova, 46-27, for a spot in the final.
