Gov't steps up disaster readiness, stockpiles relief goods—Marcos
President Marcos assured the public that the government has intensified its disaster preparedness efforts, pre-positioning relief packs and “go bags” nationwide in anticipation of future calamities.
In his latest vlog titled “Handa sa Sakuna,” the President said the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government units (LGUs) have stocked up food and essential supplies in warehouses across the country to ensure a quick response after earthquakes and other natural disasters.
“Sa amin naman sa pamahalaan, patuloy din ang maagap na paghahanda (As for us in government, our proactive preparations continue),” he said.
He added that government agencies have also strengthened their communication and information campaigns to raise public awareness and community readiness.
Despite this, Marcos encouraged families to have evacuation plans and to prepare emergency kits or “go bags,” stressing that disaster readiness should start within households.
He reminded Filipinos to include vital items such as documents, food, water, medicine, first aid supplies, flashlights, whistles, radios, and emergency cash.
“Pag kailangan tatakbo, nakahanda na ’yan, hindi na kayo maghahanap at mangongolekta ng inyong mga gamit (When you need to evacuate, everything should already be ready — you won’t have to scramble for your belongings),” he added.
Moreover, the President urged families to know where to meet after a disaster and to teach children what to do when an earthquake strikes.
He also warned the public against misinformation during calamities, citing instances in Davao and Cebu where false reports supposedly caused unnecessary panic and injuries.
Marcos advised citizens to get updates only from official government channels and local authorities.
Strict building safety standards
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive called on engineers, builders, and local governments to ensure compliance with safety standards for all structures.
He said the Philippines’ location along the Pacific Ring of Fire demands extra vigilance in enforcing construction and soil integrity rules.
“Ang kaligtasan ng bawat pamilyang Pilipino ang nakasalalay dito (The safety of every Filipino family depends on this),” Marcos said.
According to Marcos, while disasters are inevitable, preparedness can save countless lives.
“Higit sa pagbangon o pagresponde, mas mahalaga ang maging handa (More than recovery or response, being prepared is what truly matters),” he said.
The President’s latest vlog was released following a series of earthquakes that hit various parts of the country, including Cebu, Baguio, Surigao, Davao, Zambales, and Metro Manila. He said the government continues to coordinate disaster response and preparedness efforts nationwide as part of his administration’s priority on resilience and public safety.
