ILOILO CITY – Heavy rainfall from tropical cyclone “Ramil” (international name Fengshen) killed two persons and displaced nearly 18, 500 residents in Capiz and northern Iloilo provinces.
A report released by the Office of Civil Defense-6 said that both casualties were from Capiz.
Reports from the Capiz Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office identified the victims as Rizaldo Base Balgos of Roxas City and Mae Urdelas of Ivisan town.
Nearly 9,700 people were displaced by floods in Capiz and more than 8,700 in northern Iloilo.
Towns in Capiz such as Sigma are usually flooded but it was the unexpected flood in Roxas City that caught many by surprise.
Thousands were affected when Roxas City, the provincial capital, was inundated.
Residents posted on social media pages calling for rescue as floodwaters rose to more than chest-deep. Vehicles were also swept away by the strong current.
Massive flash floods were reported in northern Iloilo, in the towns of Estancia, Balasan, Batad, and Barotac Viejo.
Flood in most areas has subsided.
Various government agencies are coordinating with the affected local government units (LGUs) in Capiz and northern Iloilo for relief operations.
