Pingol saves the day as NU denies Ateneo

Karl Ann Pingol showed composure and powered reigning champion National University to an 83-79 win over Ateneo for a solo second in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday, Oct. 18.
After NU’s Aloha Betanio cut the Blue Eagles’ lead to just two, 77-79, at the 1:41 mark of the final frame, the 23-year-old Pingol took charge and eventually tied the match off a layup, 79-all, before sinking her next four free throws.
Those crucial baskets from Pingol pulled the Lady Bulldogs out of danger for their fourth straight victory and a 5-1 slate to secure the second spot.
Kacey Dela Rosa had another monstrous output but it wasn’t enough as Ateneo absorbed back-to-back losses to go with a 4-2 card.
“‘Yung 15-0 run na ‘yun stemmed from our eight turnovers during the fourth quarter which was too much. Those turnovers, all of which, I think they converted to points. Learning 'to for us," said NU head coach DA Olan.
"We were too relaxed during that stretch but I'm happy with the composure na ipinakita ng seniors namin during the crucial moments lalo nung lumamang ang Ateneo," he added.
The 5-foot-7 sweet-shooting guard finished with a game-high of 22 points with six rebounds, two assists, and four steals, while Kristine Cayabyab poured in 19 points for NU.
Marylene Solis and Marga Villanueva also impressed for the Lady Bulldogs as they combined for 23 points.
Dela Rosa, for her part, had a stellar 18-point, 16-rebound stat line which went with four assists, and one block, while Kailah Oani scored 17. Gracie Batongbakal, Camille Malagar, and Sarah Makanjuola added 12 points each for Ateneo.
Meanwhile in the juniors division, NU-Nazareth School imposed its will and annihilated Ateneo, 99-74, to keep its record pristine in seven games.
In another game, University of Santo Tomas eke past Adamson, 87-86, for its third straight win that hiked its record to 5-2 at second.
