Amid reported cases of seasonal flu in recent weeks, the Philippine National Police (PNP) leadership directed all police units nationwide on Friday, Oct. 17, to heighten health and safety measures to protect their own personnel as well as the public.
In a statement, acting PNP Chief Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. tasked the PNP Health Service to conduct regular health checks and closely monitor personnel showing influenza-like symptoms.
He also called for the provision of immediate medical attention to sick personnel to prevent further spread of illness within the ranks.
“The PNP reminds all units to continue observing basic health protocols, including proper hygiene, regular handwashing, and the use of face masks when necessary, especially in crowded areas,” Nartatez said.
Police offices and quarters were also reminded to ensure adequate ventilation and cleanliness at all times.
“Our goal is to ensure that our police officers remain healthy and capable of performing their duties while safeguarding the well-being of the communities they serve,” Nartatez noted.
Citing information from the World Health Organization (WHO), the PNP Health Service described an influenza-like illness as an infectious disease caused by various viruses or bacteria that lead to infections in the nose, throat, and lungs. It is characterized by a fever of at least 38 degrees Celsius and a cough that lasts for up to ten days.
Classes were suspended in Metro Manila and nearby provinces earlier this week due to cases of flu-like illnesses.
However, Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Ted Herbosa clarified there was no outbreak of a flu-like illness, rather, he attributed cases to the seasonal flu.
Nartatez urged the public to remain calm, avoid the spread of misinformation, and follow official health advisories.
“There is no cause for panic but it is important that everyone takes preventive measures such as staying home when sick and practicing proper hygiene. The PNP remains committed to supporting the government’s efforts to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being,” he said.
