Jamie Malonzo still in talks with B.League teams after Kyoto release

In an Instagram story on Friday, Oct. 17, just hours after Kyoto announced his departure, Malonzo said the injury situation of the team has prompted Kyoto to go a different direction and tap a bigger Asian import to strengthen its frontline.

“To everyone asking about the news — thank you for all the messages and concern, I really appreciate it. After discussions with kyoto, we've mutually agreed to part ways,” wrote Malonzo.

“The team's been dealing with injuries and wants to strengthen their frontcourt. I'm 100% healthy and ready to continue the season,” he added.

It has been a forgettable B.League stint for Malonzo so far, averaging 1.2 points and 1.0 rebounds through five games. He had seen action for Kyoto for only 30 minutes total during that five-game stretch.

It can be recalled that Malonzo opted out of his extension talks with Barangay Ginebra in the PBA and signed with Kyoto during the offseason.

Although the Kings still hold the rights to Malonzo, the 6-foot-7 forward cannot simply return to the PBA owing to the league rule that bans any player who refused to sign an extension and played elsewhere for three years.

Malonzo, though, assured that he remains in talks with other teams, signifying his plans to stay in Japan.

“I'm in talks with other teams and excited to continue my journey here in Japan,” said Malonzo.

“I'm grateful for my time with Kyoto, and thankful to the organization, teammates, coaches and amazing fans for all the support,” he added.
