3 more deaths bring Cebu quake death toll to 79 – NDRRMC

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) recorded on Friday, Oct. 17, three more fatalities due to the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that shook Bogo, City Cebu two weeks ago.
The additional fatalities brought the death toll to 79, the NDRRMC said.
There were 559 individuals who were also injured while no one was missing.
The September 30 earthquake has affected 216,947 individuals composed of 747,979 individuals in 260 barangays in Central Visayas (Region 7).
Of those affected, more than 21,000 individuals were displaced. Around 5,000 persons were staying in 17 evacuation centers while 16,000 others outside temporary shelters.
The impact of the earthquake partially damaged 126,934 houses and completely destroyed 7,295 homes.
The estimated cost of damage to infrastructure was P6.7 million.
Four of 11 affected road sections and 13 of 25 bridges remained impassable to the public due to damage.
Power supply in 48 areas in Western Visayas (Region 6) remained interrupted, leaving thousands of people without electricity. Water supply in one of the eight areas that experienced interruption remained unrestored. Communication lines in 10 out of 16 affected areas also have yet to be restored.
Two seaports also remained non-operational due to damaged facilities, affecting travel in and out of the city.
A total of 116 cities and municipalities in Region 6, 7, and Negros Island Region (NIR) have declared class suspensions. Work suspension, on the other hand, was declared in 30 areas in the affected regions.
The entire province of Cebu was declared under a state of calamity due to extensive damage.
But the NDRRMC said P416 million worth of relief assistance has been provided to the affected communities.
