World Math & Science Challenge in Zamboanga City moved to December due to recent spate of quakes
The staging of the World Mathematics and Science Challenge (WMSC) in Zamboanga City has been moved to December 15 to 18 due to the recent spate of earthquakes that struck the provinces of Cebu, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental.
This was announced yesterday by the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) which is holding the four-day international competition, originally set for November 13 to 16.
MTG head Dr. Simon Chua explained that "concerns have been raised by parents from participating countries regarding the safety of their children" taking part in the WMSC.
"Their concerns are absolutely correct," he emphasized.
Aside from the host Philippines, nine nations have, so far, confirmed their taking part in the event: China, India, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Kazahkstan.
More countries are expected to join the contest, said MTG insiders.
Robert Degolacion, chair of the local organizing committee, assured their foreign guests that the welfare and security of all participants are MTG's utmost concern.
MTG has "worked very hard to get ready for this event," he said.
He also noted that "the Philippines is a country composed of over 7,100 islands in 18 different areas. If something happens in one area, it does not mean the whole country is affected. The recent quakes took place in provinces which are far away from Zamboanga City."
Other MTG staff assured WMSC guests that accomodations are both safe and reliable in the city, which is "not prone to earthquakes."
According to Chua, the WMSC aims to "provide math and science-gifted students a platform to explore diverse cultures, exchange innovative educational practices and cultivate their natural talents through collaborative and competitive experiences."
The tilt also aims to "invigorate learning by making it more engaging and intellectually stimulating."
"Ultimately, the goal is to foster a worldwide community of learners and educators dedicated to advancing math and science education," Chua added.
The WMSC's individual and team contests, as well as the Math and Science Camp activities, will be held on December 16.
WMSC delegates will also be treated to a sightseeing tour of the port city and commercial hub in the Zamboanga Peninsula that is known for its rich history and a unique blend of Spanish, indigenous and Islamic influences.
