The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) slapped University of the East guard Wello Lingolingo a three-game suspension, the league announced Thursday, Oct. 16.
The 21-year-old Lingolingo committed an unsportsmanlike foul (category 2) after landing on the right knee of De La Salle's Kean Baclaan, with the latter eventually assessed with a season-ending MCL tear.
The Green Archers completed their comeback and outpaced the Red Warriors in overtime, 111-110, for a 3-3 slate in Season 88 men’s basketball standings.
“The suspension resulted from an unsportsmanlike foul that occurred at the 4:21 mark of the fourth quarter,” the UAAP wrote in a statement.
“While the referees had already called for a jump ball, Lingolingo dove for possession and landed on the right knee of La Salle’s No. 13, Kean Baclaan,” it added.
The Lanao del Norte native will sit out starting this Sunday, Oct. 19, when UE tangles with the Far Eastern University Tamaraws at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Upon review, it was determined that the foul involved excessive and forceful contact made by a player in an attempt to play the ball or an opponent,” UAAP continued.
Though the suspension has already been levied applied to Lingolingo, UE still has its rights to file a motion for reconsideration.
Meanwhile, UAAP's ruling on Chris Gavina's actions during the post-game press conference will be announced later today.
