The City Government of Manila has started the distribution of vital care kits on Thursday, Oct. 16, to junior and senior high school students in various public schools as part of its disaster preparedness program.
Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso led the distribution in multiple schools, including Mariano Marcos Memorial High School, Manuel Roxas High School, Esteban Abada High School, Jose Abad Santos High School, and Florentino Torres High School.
He was joined by Vice Mayor Chi Atienza in Tondo.
The kits are intended to equip students with essential tools and supplies to help them respond to emergencies, particularly in anticipation of “The Big One,” a major earthquake projected to affect Metro Manila.
“We cannot do this alone. We need your help. In times of crisis, we should be helping each other,” Domagoso told students at Manuel Roxas High School.
The mayor emphasized the role of young people as part of the city’s “multiplier force," individuals who can assist in saving lives during disasters.
He said high school students were selected because they are physically capable, can learn first aid quickly, and are in a position to support both their peers and their families in times of need.
“I trust you because I know you will help our elders and the young ones. Use these tools when necessary. Through you, we can duplicate our resources,” Domagoso said during the distribution at Jose Abad Santos High School.
The initiative aims to promote a culture of preparedness and shared responsibility among the youth in Manila.
