Ken Tan brings an impressive track record to the coaching arena, having spent over a decade developing local talents and currently working with Adelaide’s top athletes at the National and State levels.”
The experiences were close to Tan’s heart, and with his new journey in Adelaide, Australia, the mission remains the same for the 36-year-old mentor: to champion the true meaning of strength through CrossFit.
A strength and conditioning specialist, Tan, who learned about Cross Fit in 2011, co-founded the TWTMVMNT (Train With The Tans Movement), an online coaching platform driven by a genuine passion for fostering community and enhancing performance and help every gym-goer to unearth their true capabilities through the emerging high-intensity workout regimen.
“My early CrossFit coaches saw potential in me that I didn’t even know I had. They encouraged me to take this path, and the rest was history,” said Tan, who has been a fitness guru for 15 years.
“I wanted to help others experience that same sense of capability: to realize that strength isn’t just physical, but built through consistency, discipline, and mindset. Coaching gave me a platform to empower people to discover what they’re truly capable of,” he added.
With CrossFit, practitioners plunge into several disciplines, including weightlifting, gymnastics and cardio as part of its unique approach to boost endurance, strength, and overall health. And the approach to them would depend on their level, CrossFit-wise.
Which is primarily the goal of Tan, who holds a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer Certificate and is currently pursuing his Sports Science diploma at Flinders University – an Adelaide-based school – also his ASCA Level 1 course to establish himself more competent in the field.
“I was immediately drawn to the variety and intensity, but what truly kept me hooked was the sense of community. It felt like sport again, learning, failing, and getting better alongside others,” said Tan, who moved to Australia in 2023.
Before his current endeavor, Tan worked across athletics, swimming, basketball, mixed martial arts, and American football -- experiences that molded his method to CrossFit.
“For my athletes, success means staying healthy, striving, and thriving, both in sport and in life. For myself, it’s seeing growth that goes beyond physical, when athletes move better, live better,” Tan said. “And know they have a support system through our community, that’s when I know I’m doing my job right.”
Tan has been consistent in guiding crossfitters who are vying in multiple competitions, which for him, a podium finish was just a bonus, a big win for him as a coach to see his students cultivate growth, discipline, and self-belief that would make them a better person who can be an inspiration in the community.
Tan firmly believes that CrossFit will continue to grow in the coming years, as the fitness discipline has proven its effectiveness. With proper guidance from coaches like him, the program’s future looks bright.
“Start where you are. Don’t wait to be fit before you begin. You’ll be surprised how far consistency, community and purpose can take you. Move because you can, and be grateful that you get to,” he said.
