BACOLOD CITY – Seven people, including three minors, were injured after a horror train ride overturned in a carnival at the back of the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) around midnight on Monday, Oct. 13.
Police Major Joeil Reclamado, head of Police Station 4, said the victims claimed the ride was moving too fast, causing it to lose balance. The ride owner also cited speed as the cause, saying the train had derailed.
“We’re considering both accounts to determine the real cause,” Reclamado said.
The victims sustained minor injuries, including scratches, and were brought to a hospital.
A settlement was reached between the victims and the carnival management, which also shouldered their medical expenses, according to Reclamado.
Mayor Greg Gasataya ordered an urgent inspection of all carnival facilities operating for the MassKara Festival in this highly-urbanized city to ensure public safety.
The inspection was led by the Mechanical Division of the City Engineer’s Office (CEO), under officer-in-charge Engr. Loben Ceballos, along with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), which conducted a thorough assessment of the carnival site.
“Safety is our utmost concern, which is why we have asked the CEO to inspect all carnivals operating during the celebration,” Gasataya said.
The city summoned the ride operator to ensure accountability and proper support for the victims. It is currently awaiting the final inspection reports and recommendations from the CEO and CDRRMO to decide on the carnival’s continued operation.
