The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded more than 1,200 aftershocks following the magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 offshore earthquakes that struck Davao Oriental.
As of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, Phivolcs said a total of 1,281 aftershocks had been recorded, of which 604 were plotted and 15 were felt by nearby communities.
According to the agency’s Mati reference station, the recorded aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 1.2 to 5.8.
The twin tremors on October 10, classified as a doublet earthquake, caused ground shaking in parts of Davao Region and neighboring provinces.
Phivolcs said it continues to monitor aftershock activity and reminded residents in affected areas to stay alert for possible strong shaking or landslides, especially in mountainous and coastal communities.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs also issued an update on the magnitude 6.9 offshore Northern Cebu earthquake that occurred on September 30.
As of the same monitoring period, Phivolcs said a total of 12,079 aftershocks had been recorded, with 2,139 plotted and 46 reported as felt.
These aftershocks ranged in magnitude from 1.0 to 5.8, based on data from the MECP reference station.
Authorities continue to assess structural damage in the affected regions and urge the public to follow official advisories and safety guidelines issued by Phivolcs and local disaster management offices.
