The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced the temporary closure of the Navotas Navigational Gate from October 16 to 18, 2025, to allow for cleaning and maintenance work that will affect both Navotas and Malabon waterways.

In a letter addressed to Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco and Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval on Monday, Oct. 13, the MMDA said the maintenance work will involve thorough cleaning of the gate’s front apron to clear accumulated debris that could obstruct its proper operation.
During the three-day activity, all fishing vessels and boats will not be allowed to pass through the Tangos River channel, which serves as a common passageway for fisherfolk from both Navotas and Malabon.
MMDA Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office Director Baltazar Melgar said the closure is necessary to ensure the gate’s proper function and the safety of workers and boat operators.
Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval also reminded fishermen to cooperate during the temporary closure.
“Pinapayuhan ang ating mga kababayang Malabueñong mangingisda at operators na iwasan munang dumaan sa nasabing ruta sa mga nasabing petsa. Ito ay upang matiyak ang kaligtasan at tuloy-tuloy na maayos na operasyon ng ating flood control system (Our fellow Malabueno fishermen and vessel operators are advised to avoid passing through the said route on the mentioned dates to ensure safety and the continuous smooth operation of our flood control system),” she said.
The Navotas Navigational Gate is a vital flood-control structure that regulates water levels in surrounding rivers shared by Navotas, Malabon, and nearby communities.
The MMDA said the maintenance will help ensure continuous protection against flooding, especially during the rainy season.
Normal navigation through the Tangos River will resume once the maintenance work is completed.
