Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya extended the suspension of face-to-face classes in all public schools in this highly-urbanized city on Tuesday, Oct. 14, after some structures were observed to have minor and extensive damage from the magnitude-5.8 earthquake on Monday, Oct. 13.
Gasataya met the City Engineer's Office (CEO), Office of the Building Official (OBO), City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), and Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Bacolod on Tuesday to discuss the initial results of the Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis conducted on Monday.
Based on initial findings, minor and extensive damage were noticed in old structures.
The extended class suspension would enable the inspection team to thoroughly assess 40 schools here.
Five teams were deployed by the city to hasten the inspection of schools and other government structures.
The public schools concerned were encouraged to shift to modular distance learning, performance tasks, and projects.
Gasataya said that classes on the public and private tertiary levels were left to the discretion of their school heads and safety officers.
The city government stressed that the safety of the students is important before the resumption of classes.
