A total of 55 volcanic earthquakes were detected at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island over the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
In its monitoring summary issued on Monday, Oct. 13, Phivolcs said sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 1,205 tons per day as of Oct. 12.
It also observed white steam-laden plumes rising 300 meters high, with moderate emission drifting southeast.
Phivolcs said Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, meaning the volcano is currently in a state of moderate unrest that could lead to sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions.
The agency reminded the public to avoid entering the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to possible sudden hazardous explosions.
As such, Phivolcs warned pilots against flying close to the summit, citing the potential dangers posed by sudden ash or gas emissions.
The volcano’s current condition may lead to sudden steam-driven explosions or minor eruptive activity, it added.
Under Alert Level 2, Kanlaon’s activity is characterized by elevated seismicity and gas emissions but does not yet indicate an imminent major eruption.
