CEBU CITY – Northern Cebu province was jolted once again just as it is trying to get back on its feet following the magnitude-6.9 earthquake last Sept. 30.
At least 14 persons were injured when a magnitude-5.8 earthquake struck the area past midnight Monday, Oct. 13.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was an aftershock of the devastating Sept. 30 tremor that claimed 75 lives across northern Cebu.
The Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said the aftershock struck at 1:06 a.m. with its epicenter located about 11 kilometers southwest of Bogo City with a shallow depth of five kilometers.
As a result of the aftershock, Bogo recorded eight injured individuals – three complained of chest pains, three sustained lacerations, one suffered an asthma attack, and another sustained minor injuries.
Two people were also injured in San Remigio while four residents in Daanbantayan suffered minor injuries.
In Santa Fe, a house collapsed when it was hit by a water tanker. New structural damage was also discovered at Hagnaya Port in San Remigio.
The PDRMMO said response teams were immediately deployed to treat the victims. Assessments of structural damage continued in the affected areas, the PDRRMO said.
The strong aftershock occurred while Cebu remains under a state of calamity, declared through Executive Order No. 57 and Provincial Board Resolution No. 1985-2025.
The PDRRMO said the aftershock compounded ongoing recovery efforts especially in towns already struggling to rebuild.
PDRRMO chief Dennis Francis Pastor said continuous assessments are being conducted as he advised residents to stay alert for possible landslides, aftershocks, or further structural collapses.
