The official visited the bereaved families to extend her solidarity and support in light of the disasters that struck the region.
“Oo, nagbisita tayo ng mga kaibigan at kakilala natin dito sa Mati City at binisita natin iyong mga namatay dahil sa lindol. Yung dalawa, dinala na sa kanilang municipality (Yes, we visited our friends and acquaintances here in Mati City and we visited those who died because of the earthquake. There were two who were brought to their municipalities),” she said in a media interview on the sidelines of the visit.
Duterte disclosed that one of the victims there in Mati City was originally from Davao City, so they had to help facilitate the travel to bring home their loved one home.
The official reaffirmed to the victims the OVP’s commitment—through its Davao Satellite Office—“to provide timely assistance to disaster-stricken areas.” She also emphasized the importance of community resilience and cooperation during times of crisis.
According to her office, the Vice President attended a wake in Mati City at 10 a.m. on Saturday to condole with the bereaved family of one of the victims there.
Afterward, she also met with local residents ”who continue to recover from the tremor, expressing her commitment to help communities rebuild their lives.”
She also visited Carmen Go Enrique in Mati City to discuss the ongoing relief operations and rehabilitation efforts with local officials and partners.

The Vice President shared personally experiencing the aftershocks when she was in Bogo, Cebu and in Davao City.
“Napakahalaga talaga ng presence of mind, na huwag kang mataranta, mahalaga na maalala mo yung 'duck, cover and hold' at kung pwede nang tumayo para lumabas, kung safe na tumayo, lumabas kung safe na tumayo, lumabas ay lumabas kayo sa open area open space (Presence of mind is really important, don’t panic, it’s important to remember to duck, cover, and hold, and if it’s safe to get out and stand, then go out to open area open space),” she said.
Duterte recalled that when she experienced the earthquake in Davao City, she wasn’t even able to bring her mobile phone as she went out to an open space.
“So mahalaga talaga yun hindi mo makalimutan kung ano yung mga dapat mong gawin pag nandyan na yung lindol (So, it’s really important not to forget what you should do when the earthquake happens),” she added.
She also reminded everyone to prepare a “Go Bag” that will contain the necessary items needed in case of an evacuation.
The provinces of Cebu and Davao have been hit by strong quakes less than two weeks apart, with Davao Oriental experiencing magnitudes 7.4 and 6.9 on Friday, Oct. 10. Another 4.8-magnitude earthquake—an aftershock of the 7.4 quake—jolted it on Sunday, Oct. 12.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that the earthquakes have affected a total of 74,649 families or 91,224 persons, and has so far killed seven people.
